Tiebreaker

There's something about a one-game tiebreaker. It may be the most intense game there is--even more than the final game of a playoff series. The World Series too. There, at least the losing team doesn't go home empty handed: they are champions of their league (which in the American League means something). Today, the Padres or Rockies are playing one single game--a completely inadequate metric--to decide who gets a mere shot at the playoffs and who goes home with no titles to show for the season. Only in a one-game tiebreaker, everything a team has worked for over 162 games is on the line. Too bad for the Rockies they're facing Jake Peavy.

Part of the reason it is so exciting is because it is so inadequate; if two teams have the same record after 162 games, they are probably pretty comparable, and essentially you need a coin flip to separate them.

Having said that, facing Jake Peavy ain't no coin flip. He is probably the last man in the world the Rockies want to face in this situation. At least it is in Colorado, where the Rockies have a much better record.

What a crazy game. The national league is so bad, it would not surprise me if any of these teams make the world series.

Do you think they should make a special trophy for the AL champ this year? That would certainly be more prestigious than winning the world series from the National League.
