Analysis of baseball, and sometimes other topics, by a Yankees fan and a Red Sox fan united by friendship and lust for leggy South American supermodels, who are in turn united in their refusal to talk to us.

Gagne sucked, but I think you can blame Francona too. I mean, it was pretty clear that Gagne had absolutely no control. After he walks the bases loaded, you have to bring in Papelbon; the situation is very high leverage, and the Red Sox cannot just toss games away at this point.

Die Gagne die.
"Eric Gagne is a lifetime closer, that's all he knows. Also, Eric Gagne is one of the most competitive and conscientious players I've known. Now Eric Gagne is in a different role. You can go back and look at closers who are in a different role than a closer's role. Closers have difficulties in non-closer situations. This is not only true of Eric Gagne, but this is true of everyone involved. You can go down the list. I can name a lot of my clients who have had this problem."

I like how Boras insists he "can" name clients who have trouble adjusting to non-closer roles, but doesn't actually name them.
